Likud Rejects Ben-Gvir's Demands for Key Security and Justice Ministries

Senior figures within the Likud party have definitively rejected the demands put forth by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to secure the Defense and Justice portfolios for himself and MK Tali Gottlieb, respectively, in the upcoming government. Likud sources stated that these ministries are foundational to the government's identity and responsibilities and have historically remained within Likud's purview, regardless of coalition size.

Beyond internal political considerations, Likud also cited potential international repercussions as a reason for opposing Ben-Gvir's appointment as Defense Minister. Concerns were raised that such a move could provoke opposition from neighboring countries, particularly Jordan and Egypt, and could complicate ongoing security and diplomatic coordination with the United States, especially during sensitive periods.

Ben-Gvir had previously declared his intention to change Israel's security doctrine, advocating for a "spirit of victory and decision." He claimed to have stood against former IDF Chiefs of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi and Benny Gantz in the cabinet regarding operations in Gaza and Lebanon. Ben-Gvir also stated that if appointed Defense Minister, he would pursue a strategic plan for the "voluntary migration" of Gazans, asserting that 60% of Gaza's population desires such a move.
