Fiery Debate Erupts on Channel 14 Over Economy

A heated exchange between Channel 14 host Yinon Magal and Professor Yaron Zelekha, chairman of the Economic Party, dominated a broadcast of the program 'HaPatriotim' (The Patriots) on Tuesday. The discussion, initially focused on the cost of living, the state of the economy, and Prime Minister Netanyahu's policies, quickly escalated into a shouting match.

Zelekha presented his economic plan, identifying the high cost of living and the link between capital and government as key public concerns. He argued that many families struggle to make ends meet, young people find it difficult to buy homes, and banks are reaping excessive profits. Zelekha proposed measures such as canceling import duties and quotas, limiting domestic monopolies, dismantling exclusive import arrangements, and placing the Competition Authority directly under the Finance Minister.

However, the tone shifted dramatically when Magal presented data on the shekel's strength, exports, wages, and inflation, questioning Zelekha's proposed alternatives. Zelekha accused Magal of using these figures to mislead the public, asserting that despite positive macroeconomic indicators, ordinary citizens face a harsh reality in supermarkets, banks, and mortgage payments.

The confrontation intensified with Zelekha telling Magal, "Don't lecture me." The program's title referenced Magal leaping from his seat, indicating the extreme nature of the argument that spiraled out of control.
