Hamas Attempted Soldier Abductions in Gaza Three Times Last Month

Hamas operatives made three separate attempts during September to kill and abduct Israeli soldiers along the Gaza border, according to a report by journalist Moshe Noy. The incidents, which were not publicly disclosed by the IDF, resulted in the deaths of numerous militants but no successful abductions. These events occurred in the vicinity of Salah al-Din axis, a key route in Gaza, and details were cleared by military censors.

The first incident on the night of September 4 involved a D9 bulldozer encountering a large explosive device. The bulldozer's actions prevented the detonation of the charges, while militants simultaneously opened heavy fire on Israeli forces, prompting a withdrawal. The IDF responded with airstrikes on three targets, reporting only the exchange of fire to the public. The following day, ten militant bodies were found, with evidence suggesting dozens more escaped. Intelligence assessments indicate the militants planned to detonate explosives, open fire, and use the ensuing chaos to abduct and kill soldiers.

Another attempt occurred on the morning of September 4 when a remotely operated "Panda" bulldozer struck an explosive device. No soldiers were harmed in this incident, which also went unreported. A third incident involved another engineering vehicle hitting a mine. Four tanks dispatched to the scene experienced technical malfunctions, preventing them from reaching the area, and forces retreated. The Israeli Air Force conducted retaliatory strikes on several targets.

One soldier, speaking anonymously to JNS, expressed frustration with the IDF's response, describing it as "symbolic" and reminiscent of the perceived failures leading up to the October 7th attacks. The soldier conveyed a feeling of being expected to retreat when fired upon. The IDF had not yet issued a response to the report at the time of publication.
