Spain Advances Extradition of US Millionaire to US on Terror Financing Charges

Spain's government has decided to allow the extradition process of American millionaire James "Fergi" Chambers to the United States to proceed, despite opposition from left-wing coalition parties. Chambers, 41, has been held in a Spanish prison near Madrid since his July arrest in Ibiza at the request of U.S. authorities. U.S. officials suspect Chambers, an heir to the Cox Enterprises media empire, of transferring $7.5 million from the U.S. to Tunisia to aid organizations linked to Hamas. The full charges against him remain sealed.

Chambers' defense attorneys argue the funds were intended for humanitarian purposes and projects in Tunisia, including an investment in the football club Club Africain. They contend the extradition request stems from his political activism and pro-Palestinian stance. Chambers, who has reportedly distanced himself from his family's business dealings, has publicly expressed strong support for the "Palestinian resistance" following the October 7th Hamas attack, praising the assault and speaking against Israel's existence. His defense maintains his political views do not constitute evidence of terror financing.

Chambers' wife, Stella Schnabel, claims she can provide full documentation of the destinations of the funds her husband transferred. A public campaign against the extradition is underway in Spain, with politicians, activists, and cultural figures signing petitions urging the government to halt the process. However, the Spanish government's decision is not final. The National Court must now determine if the legal conditions for extradition are met. If approved, the final decision will rest with the Spanish government, which could still prevent his transfer to the U.S.
