US Millionaire Accused of Hamas Support Faces Extradition from Spain

American millionaire James "Fergie" Chambers, 41, is currently detained in Spain pending a crucial decision on his extradition to the United States. Chambers was arrested in Ibiza in July at the request of U.S. authorities, who accuse him of offenses including money laundering, conspiracy, and providing material support to Hamas. A key allegation involves a $7.5 million transfer to Tunisia, which U.S. officials suspect was linked to financing the terrorist organization, though some charges remain under seal.

Chambers denies the allegations and has sought political asylum in Spain, with his defense team arguing that extradition would subject him to political persecution due to his pro-Palestinian views and activism. His Spanish lawyer, former judge Baltasar Garzón, contends the case is politically motivated and that the funds in question were used to cover debts and salaries for the Tunisian football club Club Africain, not for Hamas.

Chambers, an heir to the Cox Enterprises media and business empire, reportedly received hundreds of millions of dollars after severing ties with his family's business. He has since embraced Marxist-Leninist ideology, converted to Islam, and funded left-wing and pro-Palestinian organizations. He also reportedly financed legal expenses and bail for protesters arrested during demonstrations against Elbit Systems facilities in the U.S.

Following the October 7th Hamas attacks, Chambers publicly expressed strong support for the "Palestinian resistance," praising the Hamas assault and questioning Israel's existence. His defense argues these political views do not constitute evidence of funding terrorism. His wife, Stella Schnabel, claims she can provide full documentation of the intended destinations of his funds.

Meanwhile, a public campaign against his extradition is underway in Spain, with left-wing politicians, activists, and cultural figures signing petitions urging the government to halt the process. The Spanish Council of Ministers is expected to decide on September 22nd whether to proceed with the extradition request, which would then move to the National Court. If the government rejects the U.S. request at this administrative stage, Chambers could be released without a full judicial review.
