UN Chief Antonio Guterres Condemns Gaza Violence and Settlements

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has criticized Israel's actions in Gaza, describing the scale of killing and destruction as the "most extensive" he has witnessed in his tenure. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Guterres also condemned the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, warning that it jeopardizes the possibility of a two-state solution and raises concerns about ethnic cleansing.

His remarks came nearly three years after the Hamas attacks of October 7th, which he characterized as "abhorrent terrorist attacks." Guterres urged the international community not to lose sight of the "devastating situation" in the Palestinian territories.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also addressed the assembly, accusing the Israeli government of committing "genocide" against Palestinians in Gaza and stating that generations of Palestinians would carry the trauma of these actions.

Some Ukrainian users criticized Guterres for dedicating significantly more attention to the Gaza conflict than to the war in Ukraine, noting his brief mention of the latter. They also took issue with his framing of the Ukraine conflict and Ukrainian responses to Russian energy infrastructure as threats to global food and energy supplies, equating them with Russia's actions.
