Turkish Woman Granted Asylum in Israel for Pro-Israel Stance

A Turkish woman, Turko Avci, who moved to Israel and publicly supported the country, has been granted political asylum. The decision came after a committee reviewed her case, noting her pro-Israel activism and the threats she faced in Turkey as a result. The Advisory Committee on Refugee Affairs determined that her return to Turkey could endanger her due to her public activities and statements praising Israel.

The Director General of the Population and Immigration Authority accepted the committee's recommendation, granting Avci refugee status in Israel. Her case will be reassessed in approximately one year. Avci expressed immense relief, stating she could finally sleep and work in Israel, enjoying associated rights. She plans to focus on her studies and utilize the opportunity to be in Israel.

Avci described the process as stressful but also exceptional, reinforcing her belief in her chosen stance. She highlighted the warm reception from Israelis, with many mothers offering her food and inviting her for Shabbat dinners, describing the kindness as "unfathomable." She vowed to fight antisemitism and defend Israel, which she now considers her true home.

During the review, the committee examined publications, articles, and threats against Avci. The decision noted she faced threats from Islamist elements and a criminal proceeding in Turkey, including an arrest warrant for allegedly insulting the president. The committee concluded that her public profile and activities posed a real danger of persecution if she returned.

Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice supported the committee's recommendation to grant asylum, with the condition of a review after one year. The Director General of the Population and Immigration Authority ultimately adopted this recommendation.
