Turkish Student Faces Severe Consequences for Pro-Israel Stance

A Turkish student living in Israel, Turko Avci, is facing significant repercussions after publicly supporting Israel following the October 7th attacks. Avci, who came to Israel to study at the Hebrew University, posted messages on social media expressing her solidarity with Israel, which led to her being accused in Turkey of "insulting President Erdogan" and "undermining Turkey's sovereignty and unity." As a result, she cannot return to her home country due to an arrest warrant.

Avci described her situation as complex, stating she is unable to return to Turkey because of the charges. She also mentioned that her criticism was directed at the mayor of Istanbul and the broader political opposition, while also expressing support for Israel and condemning calls for its destruction. She revealed that she receives thousands of threats online daily.

The most severe impact, however, has been on her family in Turkey. Avci stated that she is not in contact with them to protect them from potential danger, as they have no connection to her actions and have never visited Israel. She expressed deep sorrow over not seeing her family since October 7th and the emotional toll this separation has taken.

Avci is currently seeking legal status and asylum in Israel, as she has nowhere else to go. Her lawyer, Liat Karskes, explained that Avci is registered as an asylum seeker and is in the process of obtaining temporary status. Without an Israeli ID or work permit, she cannot access healthcare, secure decent employment, or rebuild her life.

Adding to the difficulties, the recent deterioration of relations between Israel and Turkey, following an attack in Syria, has complicated diplomatic efforts. Avci hopes for a return to diplomatic solutions and wishes to build a dignified life in Israel, contributing to both Israeli and Turkish communities.
