Turkish Student Faces Severe Consequences for Pro-Israel Stance

A Turkish student studying in Israel, Turku Avci, is facing significant repercussions after publicly supporting Israel following the October 7th attacks. Avci, who came to Israel to study at the Hebrew University, posted messages on social media expressing her solidarity with Israel, which led to her being charged in Turkey with "insulting President Erdogan" and attempting to undermine the country's sovereignty. As a result, she cannot return to her home country due to an arrest warrant.

Avci described Israel as a "magical land" and expressed gratitude for the positive impact Israelis have had on her life. In a video posted after October 7th, she criticized Turkish President Erdogan's stance, stating that his support for the Palestinian cause enabled a "terrorist organization" and threatened the secular Turkish Republic. She affirmed her continued support for Israel.

She revealed that she is currently unable to contact her family in Turkey because her statements have put them in a dangerous situation. Avci has not seen her family since October 7th and is heartbroken by the separation, which she feels is her fault for endangering them. She receives thousands of threats online daily.

Avci's legal representation is working to secure her temporary legal status in Israel, as she currently lacks an Israeli ID or work permit, preventing her from obtaining healthcare or employment. The worsening relations between Israel and Turkey have further complicated her situation. Avci stated she needs legal status and asylum in Israel, as she has nowhere else to go and wishes to rebuild her life with dignity and contribute to both Israeli and Turkish society.
