Family of Man Killed by Border Police Demands Independent Probe

The family of Alaa Mahamid, who was killed by Border Police officers in Umm al-Fahm, is demanding an independent investigation into his death and the prosecution of the officer responsible. Alaa's brother, Omar Mahamid, stated that the family is committed to pursuing legal action to uncover the truth and hold the shooter accountable.

According to the police, an officer opened fire after Mahamid allegedly attacked an officer during an attempted arrest and posed a threat to his life. However, the family claims Mahamid was shot after being detained. Local sources have indicated that circulated footage contradicts the official narrative.

Omar Mahamid emphasized that the family seeks justice for his brother and wants the responsible officer to face legal consequences. He confirmed that lawyers are handling the case and are monitoring the forensic report, which the family has not yet personally received. He noted seeing bullet wounds on his brother's body at the hospital.

The family is calling for an independent investigative committee, rejecting an inquiry solely by police-affiliated bodies. Omar highlighted the existence of numerous surveillance cameras that recorded the incident's progression and stressed the family's desire to obtain and thoroughly examine these recordings.

Media reports indicate that footage of the shooting has emerged, while police state the circumstances are under review. The Umm al-Fahm municipality and the local popular committee have also called for an independent investigation. The family vows to continue legal efforts, even escalating to the Supreme Court and publicizing the case if necessary, to prevent it from being obscured and to ensure the truth prevails.
