President Donald Trump told Fox News that Washington could become a “guardian angel” of the Strait of Hormuz and effectively take 20% of the oil passing through it. He said the United States could seize control of the waterway if necessary and charge a transit fee.
“We may take over the strait, if we need to. I’ll blow them to pieces. If they don’t make a deal, we will collect tolls,” Trump said, according to the interview. His remarks referred to the strategic chokepoint through which a major share of global oil flows.
The comments did not include details about any specific deal, deadline or military plan, but they suggested a possible U.S. response if no agreement is reached. Fox News was the outlet that aired the interview.
