Chief Rabbi Urges Environmental Care Ahead of Sukkot Holiday

Chief Rabbi of Israel Kalman Meir Bar has issued an official address to the public ahead of the Sukkot holiday, focusing on preparations and the observance of ancient traditions. In his message, the Chief Rabbi emphasized the need for particular vigilance when gathering materials for the holiday sukkah (booth).

Rabbi Bar stressed that the commandment to build a sukkah should be fulfilled in a manner that avoids harming trees and the environment, stating that protecting nature and green spaces is a priority for the religious community. He referenced the Torah's prohibition against damaging fruit trees, explaining that Jewish law forbids unnecessary or excessive harm to nature, extending this to decorative plants as well.

The Chief Rabbi noted that modern urban authorities and organizations offer alternative solutions, such as providing eco-friendly materials for sukkah roofing, which allows believers to fulfill the mitzvah without cutting branches or damaging the natural landscape.

Additionally, Rabbi Bar mentioned the traditional blessings recited when observing flowering or fruit-bearing trees, highlighting the harmony between nature and human conduct. He concluded by expressing hope for a peaceful, calm, and secure holiday for all citizens, with believers able to properly observe all religious precepts.
