Urbanica Partners with South Korean Firm for K-Beauty Expansion in Israel
Urbanica, part of the Castro-H&O group, is entering the cosmetics market through a strategic agreement with South Korea's Silicon2. The partnership aims to establish a joint venture in Israel focused on importing, marketing, and selling Korean skincare and cosmetic products under the brand "Moida K-Beauty." This initiative is expected to commence operations in 2027, featuring both physical stores and an online e-commerce platform.
Under the terms of the preliminary agreement, Urbanica will hold a 70% stake in the joint company, with Silicon2 owning the remaining 30%. The initial investment is projected at approximately 60 million shekels, with Urbanica contributing about 42 million shekels. The joint venture plans to acquire and market K-Beauty brands in Israel, potentially integrating complementary lifestyle products from Urbanica.
The venture seeks to create a multi-brand platform, consolidating numerous Korean beauty brands. Silicon2, a publicly traded South Korean company founded in 2002, specializes in distributing and selling Korean cosmetics globally and already operates its own Moida K-Beauty stores and online presence. In the twelve months ending June, Silicon2 reported revenues of approximately $958 million.
This move occurs amidst growing interest in Israel's beauty market, with other fashion and lifestyle groups also expanding into beauty sectors. Recent developments include Golf & Stylo launching a new beauty and lifestyle chain and increased consumer spending in the cosmetics sector. K-Beauty's presence in Israel has also been growing, with Lilith Cosmetics securing distribution rights for AMOREPACIFIC brands and Sephora Collection entering the market via GLAM42.
For Castro-H&O, this venture represents a new approach to the beauty market. The group already operates Kiko Milano and Yves Rocher in Israel, but these ventures have faced challenges meeting expectations. The company's CEO, Yair Ohayon, has indicated that while the existing cosmetics operations are still being given a chance to improve, the group might reconsider their future if they don't meet targets. The partnership with Silicon2 is seen as an attempt to establish a stronger foothold in the beauty market through a broader Korean brand platform, rather than relying on single-brand franchises.
