Israel's President Isaac Herzog Celebrates Birthday With Notable Life Facts

Israeli President Isaac Herzog, the 11th president of the State of Israel, is celebrating his birthday. His life story is deeply intertwined with the history of the nation. Herzog is a second-generation president, the first in Israel's history to follow in the footsteps of a presidential parent. His father, Chaim Herzog, served as the 6th president from 1983 to 1993.

His prominent family background includes his grandfather, Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog, who was the first Chief Rabbi of Israel, and his uncle Abba Eban, a former Foreign Minister and UN Ambassador. Herzog's childhood nickname, "Buji," was given to him by his mother, Aura Herzog, as a blend of the French word "bijou" (jewel).

During his youth, Herzog lived in New York while his father served as Israel's ambassador to the UN, attending the Ramaz School. He served in the military as an intelligence officer in Unit 8200 and continues to serve in the reserves as a lieutenant colonel. He is a lawyer by training, having studied at Tel Aviv University and co-founded the law firm Herzog, Fox, Neeman & Co.

Before becoming president, Herzog had a significant political career spanning approximately 15 years as a Member of Knesset. During this time, he held several senior ministerial positions, including Minister of Welfare, Minister of Tourism, Minister of Construction and Housing, and Minister of Science and Technology. He also led the Labor party and the Zionist Union faction, serving as Leader of the Opposition.

Between his political roles and the presidency, Herzog chaired the Jewish Agency for Israel, focusing on strengthening ties between Israel and the diaspora and encouraging immigration. In June 2021, he was elected president by the Knesset with a record 87 votes, the broadest support ever for a presidential candidate in Israel's history.
