Israeli Jailed for Spying on Former Defense Minister Gallant for Iran
A Haifa court sentenced Pars Abu al-Hij’a, a 32-year-old resident of Jisr az-Zarqa, to four and a half years in prison on Tuesday for carrying out missions for Iranian intelligence services. According to court documents, Abu al-Hij’a was initially instructed to photograph crowded public places. He was later tasked with documenting the home of former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. He reportedly received approximately $3,000 for these activities. Abu al-Hij’a was arrested earlier this year while gathering intelligence and confessed to contacting a foreign agent during his interrogation by the Shin Bet and police.
In a related case, Sultan Abu al-Hij’a, 31, from Tamra, has been indicted on suspicion of contacting Hamas's armed wing and Iranian intelligence agents to provide them with assistance. Separately, a 32-year-old resident of Majd al-Krum was arrested for maintaining contact for several months with a female foreign agent based in Lebanon, for whom he allegedly conducted security-related missions in exchange for promised payment.
These cases follow the indictment last month of two Ashkelon residents suspected of spying for Iran. The Shin Bet and police have stated their ongoing commitment to thwarting such espionage efforts.
