Rokas Jokubaitis Returns to Basketball Court After Year-Long Injury Layoff
Lithuanian point guard Rokas Jokubaitis made his official debut for Bayern Munich on Sunday, marking his return to the basketball court after a 384-day absence due to a severe knee injury. The injury occurred during the EuroBasket tournament on September 1, 2025, sidelining him for an entire season. Jokubaitis joined Bayern after what he described as the best season of his career with Maccabi Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague, but his debut was delayed by the significant knee injury.
Despite being part of the Bayern Munich club for a year, Jokubaitis had not played an official game until Sunday's 108-72 victory over Brose Bamberg in the German League's opening round. He admitted to the EuroLeague's official website that it felt like his second season with the team, even though it was his first official appearance. "It feels like it's my second season at Bayern, but officially it's not," he stated.
Reflecting on the timing of his injury, Jokubaitis expressed that it happened at the worst possible moment, as he felt he was playing the best basketball of his career, both in EuroBasket and the preceding season with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Initially, he hoped the injury was less severe, but an MRI confirmed the need for surgery.
During his rehabilitation, Jokubaitis was repeatedly told he would return stronger, but he struggled to believe it at first. He explained that the process itself, not just physical recovery, builds mental strength and resilience. "You have to go through the process to understand that you are really getting stronger, not necessarily in the muscles, but in the head, in the mentality," he said.
Jokubaitis also realized the profound importance of basketball in his life during his year away from the game. "I understood that a year without basketball is too much. I felt how important basketball really is to me, and that without playing I am not the same person. Now I have to appreciate it more," he concluded.
