Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Team Welcomes Key Players Back for EuroLeague Season Opener
Maccabi Tel Aviv is preparing for the start of the EuroLeague season, with coach Oded Katash set to have a deeper frontcourt for their opening away game against ASVEL Villeurbanne. The team, fresh off winning their first title of the season against Hapoel Tel Aviv, will begin their 2026-27 EuroLeague campaign on Thursday.
Most of the squad is expected to be available, with the notable exception of guard J.J. O'Brien, who is still questionable. O'Brien has returned to full practice after a hamstring injury sustained during the preseason, but medical staff are cautious about his immediate return to avoid re-injury and ensure long-term health.
On a positive note, Daniel Theis is returning to Katash's lineup. Theis had previously agreed to terms with the French club but did not sign due to financial issues before joining Maccabi Tel Aviv. The German center, who had a minor ankle injury in training, is now fully fit. Additionally, Oshine Brimah, a significant contributor to last season's championship win, will also be available, bolstering the team's frontcourt.
Meanwhile, ASVEL Villeurbanne, coached by Tony Parker, is also gearing up for the season after a turbulent summer. Their roster includes notable players such as Patty Mills, who has extensive NBA experience, Joel Embiid, and Jae Crowder. Dozens of Maccabi Tel Aviv fans are expected to travel to Lyon to support the team.
Maccabi Tel Aviv recently held a special gala event for their platinum members, where players, staff, and management met with fans. John DiBartolomeo spoke about the team's connection with its supporters and the challenges ahead for the season.
