Human Rights Group Files Criminal Complaint Against IDF Soldier in Italy

The Hind Rajab Foundation has filed a criminal complaint with Italian authorities against an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier, who they claim is currently on vacation in Tuscany. The foundation alleges the soldier's involvement in three incidents during combat operations in the Gaza Strip and is demanding an investigation.

The complaint, submitted to Italian authorities, accuses the soldier of alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide during IDF operations in Gaza. According to the foundation, the complaint pertains to three specific events that occurred between December 2023 and Spring 2024: IDF operations at the Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City, an incident at the Haj Hamdi Harazallah mosque, and destruction in the Palestine Square area of Gaza City.

The foundation asserts that the soldier served in a unit operating in these areas during the relevant period and that collected materials indicate the soldier's presence or their unit's activity in these locations. One of the primary incidents cited involves the IDF operation at Shifa Hospital in March and April 2024, with the foundation claiming to possess documentation showing the soldier's presence within the complex during the operation. However, the foundation acknowledges that mere presence at a location does not constitute proof of wrongdoing, and the allegations have not yet been legally determined.

The complaint also references the Haj Hamdi Harazallah mosque, which the foundation claims was set ablaze after Israeli forces took control of it, as well as destruction in the Palestine Square area. The foundation alleges that the soldier's unit was involved in activities in these zones. The organization is urging Italian authorities to launch an immediate investigation.

The move has already entered the political arena in Italy.
