Pro-Palestinian Group Files War Crimes Complaint Against Israeli Reservist in Greece
The Belgian pro-Palestinian organization Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) has filed a criminal complaint in Greece against an Israeli reservist, identified only as A.R., who they allege is currently in Athens. HRF claims A.R. served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and participated in combat operations in Gaza, citing "evidence documented by HRF" that places him at two sites of extensive destruction in Gaza, including Palestine Square in the Rimal neighborhood. The organization alleges the reservist posted photos of himself standing on the ruins of Palestine Square and inside a destroyed mosque, which they claim constitutes evidence of war crimes and genocide.
HRF, which has previously filed complaints against Israelis abroad, is represented in Greece by lawyer Evgenia Koniaki. Koniaki urged Greek authorities to "immediately open an investigation, investigate the suspect, and take all measures within their power, including arrest and referral for prosecution, to prevent him from leaving Greek territory." The organization asserts that A.R. "incriminated himself by publishing footage of himself against the backdrop of the Gaza conflict zone."
According to HRF, Israeli forces took control of Palestine Square on December 5, 2023, and subsequently "systematically destroyed the civilian quarter surrounding the square." They also claim soldiers from his unit photographed themselves inside a mosque after setting it on fire, with satellite images showing the mosque was completely destroyed between December 26 and 31, 2023. HRF stated that an Israeli flag and a Hanukkah display were placed "above the ruins of what was once a dense civilian quarter."
The IDF has a directive prohibiting soldiers from photographing or publishing images in uniform or from operational zones to prevent such complaints. However, HRF claims A.R.'s actions violate this directive. HRF founder and CEO, Diab Abou Jajah, a Lebanese Shiite Muslim reportedly close to Hezbollah, stated that "Greek courts have already shown they are willing to investigate serious international crimes," and that Greece now has a "real opportunity and responsibility to act responsibly" with a suspect physically present in the country.
HRF, founded about a year ago, has filed dozens of complaints against soldiers in numerous countries, including the Netherlands, Italy, Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Romania, Cyprus, Peru, the United States, and Canada. These complaints often rely on material soldiers themselves upload to social media during their service in Gaza, which the organization uses to build cases for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
