Israel Fears Rise in West Bank Attacks After Failed Holiday Operations

Israeli security forces anticipate an increase in attempted armed attacks in the West Bank, attributing this potential escalation to the perceived failure of larger-scale operations during the recent Jewish holidays. Officials fear this could spur additional, possibly imitative, attacks. In response, the Israeli military has intensified its activity across the West Bank, deploying additional forces to several areas and raising readiness levels in other locations within Israel.

The military announced the arrest of two Palestinians in the town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin, who were allegedly planning an imminent attack, possibly during Yom Kippur. The arrests were reportedly based on intelligence and part of a broader operation in Qabatiya. Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, reported that an Israeli special unit had infiltrated Qabatiya to apprehend the two individuals, identified as Mohammed Talat Ttazaza and Rami Shaukat Zakarnah. These arrests were part of a wider campaign in the Jenin governorate that included the detention of seven Palestinians, including two women, and raids on homes in the villages of Fahma and Ya'bad.

Israeli security assessments suggest the perpetrator of a recent shooting near the settlement of "Halmish" acted alone. However, authorities are monitoring increased attempts to carry out larger attacks, particularly during the holiday period. The report indicates these attempts have not yet reached the scale envisioned by their organizers, fueling Israeli concerns about subsequent efforts. In response to these concerns, the military has deployed the "Egoz" unit to the West Bank as part of additional reinforcements.

Concurrently, Israeli forces have continued operations in the town of Biddu, northwest of Jerusalem, following the "Halmish" incident. The military has measured the home of the alleged perpetrator for potential punitive measures and has searched over 100 sites, questioning approximately 90 Palestinians. Earlier on Monday, Jerusalem's governorate reported that Israeli forces arrested at least 53 Palestinians during a large-scale raid on Biddu, establishing an investigation and detention center within a commandeered house. The Palestinian Prisoners' Club stated that over 100 Palestinians have undergone field interrogations in the West Bank over the past two days, with a particular focus on Biddu and Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah.

In parallel, the Israeli military has heightened its readiness along the Gaza Strip border, bolstering its air and ground forces. While acknowledging the absence of a specific warning about an imminent attack, the military stated these measures are intended to enable a rapid response and preempt any developments.
