Air Pollution Plummets on Yom Kippur Across Israel, Data Shows
Air quality across Israel was "very good" on Yom Kippur 2026, according to data from the National Air Monitoring Array overseen by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The significant reduction in air pollutants, primarily from transportation, is attributed to the holiday's cessation of traffic.
Nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels, a key indicator of traffic pollution, dropped dramatically in major cities like Haifa, Gush Dan, and Jerusalem. Peak concentrations measured during the holiday in these urban centers ranged from 3.1 to 61.1 parts per billion (ppb), a stark contrast to the half-hourly environmental value of 500 ppb. For example, in Haifa, NOx levels on Independence Avenue fell from 129.6 ppb the day before Yom Kippur to 10.1 ppb on the holiday itself. Similar sharp declines were observed in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
While most areas saw improvements, Bnei Brak's Jabotinsky Street experienced a rise in peak NOx concentrations from 23 ppb to 61.1 ppb, which the ministry suggested might be due to its proximity to a hospital and its function as a main traffic artery. Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) levels were also low in many locations, aided by favorable meteorological conditions including clean air from the west and good dispersion.
Benzene levels, another pollutant often linked to traffic, also decreased significantly. In Jerusalem, concentrations dropped from 0.28 ppb to 0.06 ppb, and in Tel Aviv from 0.35 ppb to 0.19 ppb. Even in areas near industrial zones, short-term benzene levels did not increase during the holiday.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce air pollution from transportation throughout the year, including regulatory measures, financial incentives, and promoting shifts in mobility patterns. These initiatives include encouraging public transport, walking, cycling, and the transition to zero-emission vehicles. To date, Israel has introduced approximately 2,842 electric buses and 95 electric minibuses, partly funded by grants totaling around 100 million shekels. Additionally, 8 million shekels have been allocated to support the purchase of electric garbage trucks.
