Secret Tunnel for Netanyahu to Synagogue Unfinished Before Yom Kippur

Massive construction efforts were undertaken near the Israeli Prime Minister's residence in Jerusalem to build a secret, covered passage to a nearby synagogue for Benjamin Netanyahu to attend Yom Kippur services. The approximately 15-20 meter long structure, designed with air conditioning, was intended to allow the Prime Minister to walk directly from his temporary residence at 35 Gaza Street to the "Yad Tamar" synagogue.

The project, which involved significant disruptions to the neighborhood including street closures and the removal of parked cars, was managed by the Shin Bet and the Prime Minister's Office security service. Dozens of workers and police were involved, with security personnel also utilizing areas around neighboring homes to secure the route.

However, construction was abruptly halted shortly before Yom Kippur, despite a significant portion of the tunnel being completed. The Prime Minister ultimately did not use the passage and did not attend the synagogue. The reasons for the last-minute cancellation remain undisclosed, as is the total cost of the project and associated security measures.

Netanyahu is currently residing at the Gaza Street address due to ongoing renovations at the official Balfour Street residence, which are expected to conclude in 2027. The extensive, ultimately unused preparations reportedly caused dissatisfaction among local residents.
