IDF Eliminates Hamas Rafah Brigade Commander After Months of Surveillance

The Israeli military (IDF) successfully eliminated Nail Abu-Abid, the commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade, in a targeted operation that followed several months of intelligence gathering and surveillance. Army sources told Ynet on Monday, September 21, that the swift operation was the result of meticulous information collection by the Southern Command's control center and intelligence division, which searched "unexpected places" to locate the target. "When precise intelligence was obtained, events began to develop at maximum speed," the control center stated, emphasizing that such operations are prepared long in advance with significant effort and inter-agency cooperation. Abu-Abid was described as a highly active terrorist whose identity was long known, and who had become aware he was being targeted, leading him to move covertly.

Abu-Abid had only recently, in May 2026, replaced his predecessor Muhammad Shabane, who was killed in Khan Younis along with the then-head of Hamas in Gaza, Muhammad Sinwar. The IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) stated that Abu-Abid was involved in numerous attacks against Israeli civilians. Before commanding the Rafah Brigade, he led the "Tel Sultan" battalion and was considered a key figure in Hamas's military wing, personally planning and executing sabotage operations. The elimination is seen as a significant blow to Hamas and a boost to the security and morale of IDF forces operating in southern Gaza.

The operation against Abu-Abid, reported on September 16, is part of a series of targeted assassinations of senior Hamas leaders by the IDF and Shin Bet. The previous day, Ahmed al-Bats, commander of the "Jabalia" battalion in northern Gaza, was killed. The military stated that measures were taken to minimize civilian casualties during this strike, including the use of precision weapons and aerial surveillance. Concurrently, in Khan Younis, Muhsen Abu Hadaf, commander of an Islamic Jihad rocket unit involved in the October 7, 2023, attack on Kisufim, was eliminated. The IDF reported that Abu Hadaf had been preparing attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and systematically violated ceasefire agreements.

Earlier, on September 11, the IDF eliminated Muhammad Abdul Salam al-Yazouri, known as Abu al-Hatam, who commanded the "Khan Younis" Brigade. He was the highest-ranking commander in Hamas's military wing, having taken command in July 2024 after his predecessor, Rafa Salamah, was killed along with Hamas military chief Muhammad Deif. Al-Yazouri had held senior positions in the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades for years, including heading the intelligence apparatus responsible for preparing for the October 7 attacks. Previous attempts to eliminate him had failed.

According to security sources, over 700 terrorists have been eliminated in Gaza since October 2025.
