Jerusalem Police Finalize Yom Kippur Preparations, Announce Road Closures
The Jerusalem District Police have concluded their operational preparations for Yom Kippur, deploying enhanced forces throughout the city, surrounding regional councils, and towns. The deployment, which began early in the morning, aims to ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors, maintain public order, and facilitate the observance of the holy day.
Commander of the Jerusalem District, Major General Afshlom Bied, conducted a field tour to meet with police and Border Police officers stationed at various locations, particularly in public gathering areas where residents were shopping for the holiday. He commended the officers, stating, "Thanks to you, the residents of Jerusalem are shopping for the holiday in complete security, and thanks to your deployment, vigilance, and dedication, they will be able to observe the rituals of Yom Kippur in peace and security. You are the protective shield of Jerusalem."
Police stated that preparations will continue throughout the holiday, with a focus on holy sites, pilgrim routes, and areas prone to friction, which are expected to experience heavy pedestrian traffic. Officers will work to maintain public security while respecting freedom of worship and allowing all segments of the population to observe Yom Kippur according to its traditions in peace and tranquility.
Significant traffic disruptions are planned. In the Old City and city center, the Israeli Army Square, Shfetei Israel Street, and the Israeli Army Tunnel will be closed to traffic in both directions. Roads leading to the Damascus Gate, Dung Gate, and New Gate will also be closed. In the north of the city, Uzi Narkis Tunnel and the Yigal Yadin/Golda Meir intersection will be closed, along with all intersections on Haim Bar Lev Street and the turn from Yekutiel Adam intersection towards Pisgat Ze'ev. In the south, Hebron Road will be closed to westbound traffic, and entrances from Hebron Road leading to Arnona and Har Homa neighborhoods will be shut.
Israeli Police urged the public to exercise tolerance, consideration for others, respect the character of Yom Kippur, and obey the instructions of police officers. They emphasized that alongside maintaining security and public order, the police will act with the necessary sensitivity to allow everyone to continue their daily routines. Drivers were advised to exercise extreme caution, adjust speed to road conditions, drive responsibly, and pay maximum attention to pedestrians and other road users. The public was also encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious incidents immediately to the emergency center at 100.
