Palestinian Authority Breaks Ground on Water Tank Project in Hebron Refugee Camp
Under the patronage of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Department of Refugee Affairs of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has laid the cornerstone for a new water tank project in the Al-Fawar refugee camp in the Hebron Governorate. The initiative is part of a broader field tour aimed at assessing the needs and improving living conditions in refugee camps across the southern West Bank.
The cornerstone ceremony was attended by key PLO officials, including Dr. Ahmed Abu Holi, head of the Department of Refugee Affairs, and Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin, alongside representatives from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the Palestinian Water Authority, and local camp committees.
The Al-Fawar water tank project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at a cost of $672,000, will have a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters. Officials stated the project aims to enhance the camp's water infrastructure, improve service delivery to refugees, and meet growing demand.
Dr. Abu Holi emphasized that the project aligns with President Abbas's directives to bolster refugee resilience and living standards. He also stressed the importance of UNRWA's role and mandate, particularly in light of recent challenges, asserting that such projects complement rather than replace UNRWA's responsibilities until a just solution for refugees is found.
Following the ceremony, the delegation continued its tour to other refugee camps in the southern West Bank, including Al-Aroub and Dheisheh, to review conditions, discuss needs and challenges with local committees and UNRWA representatives, and explore ways to enhance cooperation and coordination.
