Hapoel Tel Aviv Players Express Concerns Over Sofia Base

Players from the Israeli basketball club Hapoel Tel Aviv have voiced strong reservations to the team's management about establishing a permanent base in Sofia, Bulgaria. The players conveyed that basing the team abroad would hinder their ability to succeed and maintain optimal professional performance throughout the season.

This comes after a difficult derby loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv, prompting discussions about the team's future operational base. Chairman Stav Shaham and professional manager George Hinnas held conversations with several players, who highlighted the challenges of maintaining a consistent life routine and professional conduct while based in Sofia. They emphasized the need for a stable home base in Israel, especially for Israeli players who are separated from their families.

Shaham himself had previously stated his preference for the team to play and be based in Israel, calling it a top priority. This sentiment is shared by other stakeholders, including Ofer Yanai and Gili Re'anan, who also indicated a desire for the team to train and reside in Israel.

Adding to the complexity, unlike last year, foreign players this season (with the exception of Ish Wainright) have been provided with apartments in Bulgaria rather than Israel, further complicating the issue of a home base.
