Hapoel Tel Aviv Players Express Concerns Over Sofia Base

Players from the Israeli basketball club Hapoel Tel Aviv have voiced strong reservations to the team's management about establishing a permanent base in Sofia, Bulgaria. The players conveyed their concerns during recent discussions initiated by Chairman Stav Shaham and professional manager George Hinnas, following a significant derby loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv. They argued that maintaining a base in Sofia would hinder the team's ability to succeed and operate optimally throughout a demanding season, citing difficulties with daily life and professional routines away from home.

The players emphasized the need for a stable and clear base of operations, particularly for the Israeli players who are separated from their families. This contrasts with the preference of the coaching staff, who reportedly favor remaining in the Bulgarian capital. The club's leadership, including Shaham, Ofer Yanai, and Gili Re'anan, has previously indicated a desire for the team to train and reside in Israel, with Shaham stating it as a top priority.

Adding to the complexity, unlike last season, foreign players this year have been provided with apartments in Bulgaria, with the exception of one player, rather than in Israel. The debate over the team's base has gained increased importance for Hapoel Tel Aviv following their poor start to the season, highlighted by the derby defeat.
