Czech Republic Eyes Major Air Defense Deal With Israel

By אודי עציון
Translated & summarized from Walla by baba
The story · English

The Czech Ministry of Defense is in advanced negotiations with Israel's Ministry of Defense for a significant new security deal, aiming to double its existing air defense capabilities acquired from Israel. This move comes amid Czech concerns over Russian drones and cruise missiles that have been observed deviating into Czech and Polish airspace. The Czech Republic seeks to enhance its ability to detect and intercept aerial threats.

In 2021, the Czech Republic selected Rafael's SPYDER system to replace its Soviet-era SA-6 missile batteries, as part of its commitment to bolstering NATO's air defenses in Eastern Europe. That initial deal included four systems mounted on local Tatra trucks. Each truck is equipped with an IAI-manufactured MMR radar, also used by the Iron Dome, Python 4/5 heat-seeking missiles, Derby ER radar-guided missiles, and a command and control system. These systems can operate independently and relocate within minutes, a crucial capability against drone swarms and UAVs.

Now, the Czech Republic intends to purchase an additional four SPYDER systems along with a supplementary missile supply. This potential deal follows Romania's framework agreement earlier this year to acquire SPYDER systems for $2.3 billion, including an initial order worth hundreds of millions of dollars. If finalized, the Czech deal could become Rafael's largest ever.

The SPYDER system has previously been sold to India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Kenya, and according to foreign sources, also to the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Azerbaijan, and Singapore, making it one of the most widely deployed mobile air defense systems globally.
