Israel Falls to Slovenia in Davis Cup Ties
The Israeli Davis Cup team began their campaign with two losses against Slovenia on Friday. In the opening match, Israel's top-ranked player, Amit Weintraub (ranked 589), was defeated by Slovenia's Blaz Rola (ranked 511) with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Weintraub struggled to find his form, losing the first set after being broken once, and then losing the second set after being broken in the final game.
The second singles match saw Yshai Oliel (ranked 716) face Filip Planinsek (ranked 491). Oliel lost the match 7-6, 6-1 after a closely contested first set that went to a tiebreak, which he lost. The second set saw Oliel's spirit broken as he conceded the match.
These initial losses put Israel in a precarious position. If Israel loses one more match in the series against Slovenia, they will face a relegation playoff in Group 2 in February. The winner of the series will advance to Group 1.
