Israeli Education Minister Addresses Arab Community's School Year Opening Conference

A national conference to mark the opening of the 2026-2027 academic year for the Arab education system in Israel was held Thursday at Sakhnin Academic College. Titled "Compass for Life," the event brought together prominent figures from education, local authorities, and professional teams from across the country.

Key attendees included Education Minister Yoav Kisch, head of the National Committee of Heads of Arab Local Authorities Mazen Ghnaim, head of the Committee of Heads of Bedouin Local Authorities Munir Zubaydat, and Director of the Higher Educational Administration for the Arab Community Shireen Hafi-Nator. Also present were numerous local authority heads, the president of Sakhnin Academic College Professor Faisal Azaiza, college officials, inspectors, education department directors, school principals, teachers, and other educational leaders.

The conference focused on the primary challenges facing the Arab education system, outlining plans and goals for the new academic year. Emphasis was placed on continuous development and enhancing the system's responsiveness to the needs of students, local authorities, and staff.

Minister Kisch highlighted the importance of strengthening Arab education and promoting equal opportunities, stressing cooperation between his ministry, the Higher Educational Administration for the Arab Community, and the Forum of Local Authorities. He affirmed the ongoing implementation of a five-year plan, including infrastructure development, and pointed to educational achievements within the Arab sector. Kisch also mentioned programs like "Tafsil," which provides resources and funding for educational institutions.

Shireen Hafi-Nator expressed confidence in the Arab education system and appreciation for the collaborative efforts supporting its development. She noted the broad participation from across Israel as a reflection of shared responsibility and partnership, stating that "cooperation and joint work are beginning to bear fruit." Hafi-Nator cited improvements in Arabic language promotion, international exam results, and curriculum development. She also addressed the need to combat violence and enhance programs for student support, emphasizing that these efforts continue despite challenges.

The Ministry of Education stated the conference served as a platform for dialogue and cooperation to formulate a shared vision for the future, aiming for a quality, equitable education system tailored to the needs of the Arab community. The conference title, "Compass for Life," signifies an educational approach focused on personal development and equipping students with skills for life and societal engagement.
