Finance Minister Smotrich Honored for Kashrut Law Reform

Rabbis from the Kashrut organization 'Kosherot' presented Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich with a "Shield of the Kashrut Wall" award at his office on Tuesday. The award recognizes Smotrich's leadership in advancing a significant amendment to the law prohibiting fraud in kashrut (kosher food certification).

The amendment aims to establish a state-run kashrut system with transparent and uniform procedures, enhanced supervision and enforcement, and regulated status for kashrut supervisors, thereby reducing conflicts of interest and bolstering public trust. The framed certificate, signed by Rabbi Eliyahu Levin and Rabbi Moshe Katz, praised Smotrich's contribution to "restoring the kashrut system to a path of national responsibility."

Rabbi Moshe Katz thanked the minister, stating that the organization had worked for many years without success until Smotrich's involvement. He expressed hope for the law's full implementation in the next term to strengthen kashrut and purity among the Jewish people.

Smotrich, in turn, thanked the 'Kosherot' representatives and MK Ohad Tal, who led discussions on the bill in the Knesset committee. He highlighted the law's significance in establishing uniform and transparent standards, enabling an appeals mechanism, and separating the supervisor from the supervised. Smotrich emphasized that the reform proves it is possible to maintain kashrut standards while also being efficient and helping to alleviate the cost of living.
