Israeli Kashrut Organization Hails New Law as Historic Victory for Kosher Observance
The Kashrut Organization praised the Knesset's approval of an amendment to the Law Prohibiting Fraud in Kashrut, calling it a "historic milestone for all who observe kosher." The law was passed with 46 votes in favor and aims to strengthen the kosher certification system through a unified standard, increased transparency, enforcement, digitalization, supervisor certification, and oversight mechanisms to prevent past failures.
The organization noted that the legislation had been in development for nearly a decade and enjoys broad support from most of Israel's rabbinical authorities, including the Chief Rabbi and members of the Chief Rabbinate Council. They thanked Knesset member Ohad Tal for leading the initiative and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for backing the bill's advancement. The group emphasized the need to set aside disagreements and work together to implement the law, stating, "Kashrut belongs to all of us."
Following the law's passage, Knesset member Michael Malchieli issued a statement highlighting the long struggle led by Shas party chairman Aryeh Deri to amend the Kahana reform, which he said threatened the integrity of kosher certification in Israel. Malchieli added that the reform would reinforce the Chief Rabbinate and Israel's rabbis, regulate kosher supervisors' employment contrary to misinformation spread by vested interests, and help reduce the cost of living for all Israeli citizens.
