Israeli Knesset Debates Kashrut Reform to Centralize Certification Authority

The Israeli Knesset began discussing a kashrut reform bill proposed by MK Ohad Tal from the Religious Zionism party. The bill aims to eliminate private kosher certification bodies and return exclusive authority to issue kosher certificates to the Chief Rabbinate, authorized local rabbis, and the military rabbinate as applicable. The legislation also seeks to regulate the kosher supervision system, including certification standards, the status of kosher supervisors, oversight mechanisms, and an annual reporting obligation to the Knesset.

The bill incorporates provisions introduced during preliminary committee discussions to establish appeal and supervision mechanisms and to regulate the employment of kosher supervisors by severing their direct ties to businesses. Supporters argue this will standardize and strengthen kosher certification.

Opponents warn that concentrating authority in the Chief Rabbinate could create a monopoly, reduce competition, and increase financial burdens on business owners. The coalition expects the Knesset debate to last several hours, with second and third readings and votes scheduled around 12:30 a.m. during the final legislative session before the summer recess.

This debate follows the recent approval of a bill freezing arrests of yeshiva students and other legislative measures, as the Knesset rushes to pass laws before its upcoming dissolution.
