Court Reduces Sentence for Illegal Resident Due to Harsh Jail Conditions

A court has significantly reduced the sentence for a resident convicted of illegal presence in Israel, citing extremely poor sanitary conditions and harsh detention circumstances. The detainee suffered from severe environmental deprivation and hundreds of flea bites during his incarceration in a Prison Service facility, which negatively impacted his health and well-being.

Despite the conviction for illegal entry, the court accepted the defense's arguments regarding the detention conditions. Consequently, the judge imposed a reduced sentence of only 20 days in actual prison, along with a nominal fine of 2,000 shekels.

Critics of the ruling argue that this leniency by the judiciary may encourage further illegal entries into the country.
