Israeli Supreme Court Upholds Sentences in Red Sea Hotel Gang Rape Case in Eilat

The Israeli Supreme Court rejected the appeals of the main defendants involved in the 2020 gang rape case at the Red Sea Hotel in Eilat, maintaining severe prison sentences. The court, led by Justice Alex Stein with Justices Khaled Kabub and Ruth Ronen, upheld a 22-year sentence for the primary perpetrator and a 14-year sentence for another key defendant, Isi Rafaelov. While the court confirmed the heavy sentences for the adults, it moderately reduced the penalties for the minors involved, emphasizing rehabilitation and graduated punishment.

One adult defendant, Ilizir Mairov, was acquitted of aiding rape but convicted of aggravated indecent acts for watching the assault, resulting in a significantly reduced sentence with the state's agreement. Another minor who did not enter the room was convicted of a lesser offense and sentenced to community service and probation. The judges underscored the severity of the crimes and clarified that intoxication or loose behavior does not justify sexual assault.

Addressing the victim directly, the court stressed that she bears no blame for the assault despite her intoxicated state, placing full responsibility on the attackers. The judges expressed hope that the ruling would aid the victim's recovery and help her regain dignity. The case, which sparked widespread public outrage and calls for justice, involved a group of adults and minors exploiting a 16-year-old girl’s impaired condition to commit the brutal gang rape in August 2020.
