Prominent Rabbi Performs Pre-Yom Kippur Rituals for Yeshiva Students
Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, head of the Ma'or HaTalmud yeshiva and a member of the Council of Torah Sages, performed the pre-Yom Kippur ritual of 'pidyon hakaparot' (redemption of sins) using a rooster on Thursday. The ceremony took place in his office at the yeshiva with a small group of senior students present. Following the ritual, the rooster was taken to the yeshiva courtyard where an expert kosher slaughterer performed the shechita (ritual slaughter).
After the slaughter, Rabbi Kook observed the commandment of covering the blood with earth in the presence of hundreds of yeshiva students and a large crowd. The article notes that the ritual, including the use of a rooster for 'kaparot,' is also practiced by young children in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem.
