Ex-IDF Spokesperson Daniel Hagari Considered for Political List

Former IDF Spokesperson Daniel Hagari was a surprise candidate considered for the "Yashar" political list led by Gadi Eisenkot until the final moments before the list's submission deadline. Eisenkot and Hagari held discussions about the possibility of Hagari joining the Knesset list, with Eisenkot seeing Hagari as a potential electoral asset, according to a poll he commissioned. Hagari, a retired Brigadier General, ultimately decided against entering politics to pursue his private endeavors.

The close relationship between Eisenkot and Hagari dates back to Eisenkot's tenure as Chief of Staff, during which Hagari served as his personal aide for two years and was later appointed commander of the elite Shayetet 13 naval commando unit. This bond was evident during the war when Hagari, as IDF spokesperson, addressed the death of Eisenkot's son, Gal, who fell in combat in Gaza.

Eisenkot's poll indicated that both Hagari and current MK Chili Tropper could provide electoral benefits to the list and the broader bloc. While Tropper was ultimately included in the list, Hagari's potential inclusion did not materialize. Eisenkot had intended Hagari's recruitment to be a surprise element of his campaign strategy.

Despite Hagari having made an initial decision not to enter politics, the option remained open until very close to the submission deadline. However, hours before the lists were finalized, the decision was made not to proceed with Hagari's candidacy. Hagari stated, "As I have previously stated, I have no intention of entering politics." Eisenkot's "Yashar" party declined to comment on private conversations.
