Rishon Lezion's 'Umbrella' Program Wins National Award for Social Cohesion

The city of Rishon Lezion's "Umbrella" program has been honored with the Minister of Education's Award for Social Cohesion and Israeli Hope. The award recognizes the program's significant efforts in promoting inclusion, equality, partnership, and leadership among youth, particularly its work with young people with and without disabilities.

The "Umbrella" program, led by the Youth and Young Adults Department in collaboration with the Department for the Welfare of People with Disabilities, was among 12 outstanding youth units across Israel to receive this prestigious recognition. The award ceremony took place in Jerusalem on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, with representatives from the Ministry of Education in attendance.

A committee evaluated the program based on several key parameters, including strengthening social cohesion, community contribution, empowering vulnerable populations, fostering a sense of belonging, hope, and Zionism among youth, and promoting respectful dialogue through innovation and creativity. The program's success was also attributed to its broad partnerships with municipal departments, educational institutions, and various organizations, demonstrating a sustained impact over the years.

Launched in 2017 as a pilot theater group, "Umbrella" aimed to create an equitable and inclusive space for young people with and without disabilities. It has since expanded into a city-wide initiative for individuals aged 14-21, serving as a model for inclusion and integration. The program's activities include a summer camp, a "Wave Guardians" group in partnership with the municipal surfing club, an event called "Equal" to raise awareness about the rights of people with disabilities, and other community initiatives.
