Scream Star Matthew Lillard Regrets Returning for Sequel After Melissa Barrera Firing

Matthew Lillard, who reprised his role as Stu Macher in the recent "Scream 7," has expressed regret over his decision to return to the franchise following the dismissal of actress Melissa Barrera. Barrera was fired from the film approximately three years ago due to her social media posts criticizing Israel and expressing support for Palestinians, which the production company Spyglass deemed antisemitic and incited hatred.

Speaking at a special screening event celebrating 30 years of the original "Scream," Lillard stated, "I feel bad about it. I'm on the wrong side of history." He elaborated that the entire world should have supported Barrera, saying, "The whole world should have stood up and said, 'She's right.' And they didn't. And it's cruel." Lillard believes Barrera was ahead of her time in her statements, which preceded the events of October 7, 2023.

Lillard admitted that upon returning for "Scream 7," he was so excited to be back that he didn't fully consider Barrera's situation or the implications of his return. "I messed up. I'm on the wrong side of history on this," he confessed, adding, "I'm embarrassed; that's the truth." He acknowledged that while he still enjoys being part of the film, his return might not have been the best decision.

The controversy surrounding Barrera's firing led to significant upheaval in the "Scream" franchise. Jenna Ortega, initially slated to star, departed the project, with her departure officially attributed to scheduling conflicts. Director Christopher Landon also left, stating he did not wish to continue without Barrera. Despite these issues, "Scream 7" was released in February and became the most financially successful film in the franchise's history, grossing approximately $214 million worldwide.
