Israelis Urged to Prepare for Attacks During Yom Kippur

Former senior Israeli security official Eitan Barbing warned Israelis to be vigilant during Yom Kippur, citing potential attacks on synagogues and a possible escalation in Judea and Samaria. Speaking on 103FM radio, Barbing emphasized that synagogues, due to large gatherings for prayer, are difficult to fully secure by police and security services alone. He advised communities to enhance their own preparedness.

Barbing specifically recommended that licensed gun owners carry their weapons to synagogue services, noting that religious institutions have been targets of terrorism in the past. He also suggested that synagogue leaders ensure individuals capable of responding to an attack are present before security forces arrive.

The former official identified Judea and Samaria as another potential flashpoint. While Israeli security agencies are considering various worst-case scenarios, including concerns about Palestinian security forces' weaponry, Barbing stated he is unaware of any organized large-scale attack preparations by Palestinian factions. He believes a more likely threat is a localized incident triggering a wider chain reaction, which he described as difficult to predict.

Barbing contrasted the current situation in Judea and Samaria with that preceding the October 7th attacks near Gaza. He noted that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintain a constant presence and operational capability throughout the region, from Jenin to the southern Hebron Hills, allowing for rapid responses.
