Hanan Ben Ari Surprised by Global Success of His Song 'Hashivenu'

Israeli singer and songwriter Hanan Ben Ari has released a live performance video of his song 'Hashivenu,' featuring a recording of the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. The song, which is based on the verse 'Return us, Lord, to You, and we shall return; renew our days as of old,' has unexpectedly become a global hit among Jewish communities worldwide.

Ben Ari expressed his astonishment at the song's widespread adoption, noting that people are singing and praying it everywhere as if it were an ancient melody. He described the song's journey over the past year as "completely crazy" and "under the radar."

He also reflected on his decision to set the verse from the Book of Lamentations to music, admitting that he rarely composes existing verses. Ben Ari stated that this experience has shown him how much he doesn't understand, how brilliant God is, and how songs can be wiser than their creators.

'Hashivenu' was originally released around the time of hostage releases from captivity. Ben Ari revealed that he hadn't initially planned to release it then, but the news of the hostages' return prompted him to change his plans. He shared that the melody had been playing in his mind for a year, a prayer for renewal. He intended for it to close his upcoming album but felt compelled to release it sooner upon hearing about the return of hostages, incorporating a sample of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.
