Senior Rabbis Perform Kaparot Ritual Ahead of Yom Kippur
Days before Yom Kippur, two prominent Lithuanian-haredi rabbis, Rabbi Meir Tzvi Bergman and Rabbi Baruch Dov Povarsky, members of the Council of Torah Sages, performed the traditional Kaparot ritual. The ceremony, involving swinging chickens overhead while reciting prayers for atonement, took place in their respective studies.
Photographer Shuki Lerer documented the deeply moving ceremonies, capturing the solemn atmosphere as the rabbis carried out this pre-Yom Kippur custom. The ritual is a significant practice within some Orthodox Jewish communities, intended to symbolically transfer sins to the chickens, which are then typically slaughtered and often donated to charity.
