Israel's Foreign Minister Pushes Ambassador Appointments Amid Election Campaign
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has decided to advance the appointment of twelve ambassadors abroad, submitting the nominations to the ministry's personnel committee. The decision comes during the height of an election campaign, although most of the appointees are not scheduled to begin their roles until the summer of 2027. The appointments are for professional diplomats, not political ones, which are legally prohibited during election periods.
Despite the professional nature of the appointments, ministry staff and senior officials have expressed dissatisfaction with the timing. Sources within the ministry described the situation critically, suggesting the move appears rushed and questionable so close to an election. The nominations include future ambassadors to India, Jordan, Canada, Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Switzerland, Paraguay, Rwanda, Ghana, and Belarus, along with a consul general appointment for Munich.
The new ambassador to India is slated to begin in November 2026, with the remaining appointees taking up their posts gradually through mid-2027.
