Israel's Attorney General Rejects Lapid's Bid to Halt Ambassador Appointments

Israel's Attorney General has denied a request from opposition leader Yair Lapid to freeze appointments for diplomatic positions ahead of the October 27 elections. The request concerned 12 candidates slated for ambassadorial roles, whom Foreign Minister Gideon Saar intended to put forward for approval.

In a letter to Lapid's attorney, the Attorney General's office stated that halting the appointments would harm public interests. They emphasized the practical necessity of filling these vacant posts, citing the time required for diplomats to prepare for overseas assignments.

Lapid had argued for the suspension, pointing to the approximately five weeks remaining until the election and expressing concern that approving new ambassadors now could restrict the incoming foreign minister's options. The opposition leader's appeal did not question the qualifications of the proposed candidates.

The Attorney General's office also noted that Lapid himself continued to appoint diplomats during a previous election period when he served as foreign minister. The decision means the appointment process for the 12 ambassadorial positions will proceed.
