Elite Police Unit Caught in Political Battle Between Minister and Police Chief

Israel's elite counter-terrorism unit, the Gideonim (33), has become embroiled in a public dispute between National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Police Commissioner Danny Levi. A senior officer within the Gideonim conveyed a message to the unit's members, stating that the "media chaos and conflicts between the spokesperson and Minister Ben-Gvir are not of interest to us, and we certainly have not started any 'rebellion.'"

Earlier this week, reports emerged from police sources indicating that budget freezes imposed by Minister Ben-Gvir were negatively impacting not only the police force's general operations but also its elite units involved in counter-terrorism and serious crime. One senior police source claimed that Gideonim fighters were forced to sleep in tents and the unit's club under substandard conditions, with inadequate infrastructure for an elite operational unit.

Minister Ben-Gvir presented a contrasting view, asserting that funds allocated for renovations had been transferred months prior but were allegedly misused by the police for other purposes. He posted on social media, showcasing what he described as a spa facility built for the Gideonim, including a jacuzzi, sauna, and ice bath, as part of a multi-million shekel investment. Ben-Gvir stated that the fighters, who risk their lives for national security, deserve such amenities after operations.

However, the Gideonim unit is reportedly seeking to distance itself from the public conflict. The senior officer's internal message emphasized that while conditions are not ideal and challenges exist, their unit's name has been taken out of context and used in budget and political struggles unrelated to them. The officer also refuted claims that the minister is no longer welcome at the unit, labeling such reports as fake news.
