Four Convicted for Plotting Iranian-Directed Attacks in Israel

An Israeli court has convicted four residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa for carrying out serious security offenses on behalf of Iran's intelligence services. The four pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal that revealed a series of missions aimed at harming national security.

These missions included gathering intelligence for the assassination of an Israeli nuclear scientist and his family, acquiring weapons, and staging propaganda attacks. According to the indictment, an Iranian operative contacted a key defendant, offering payment to establish a terror cell and execute these security tasks.

Two of the convicted, Mamdouh Khader and Omri Abu Hamida, were found guilty of failing to prevent an act of terror. They were involved in a reconnaissance mission at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, reportedly on behalf of Iran, and filmed the entrance despite being denied access. When questioned about the filming, they were told it was related to an individual Iran wished to assassinate, but they did not report the information.

The other two defendants, Mahmoud Khader and Muhammad Taha, were convicted of aiding contact with a foreign agent. Mahmoud Khader assisted in documenting addresses in Jerusalem, drove another defendant to collect grenades, and helped obtain a fake police license plate for a staged video of an attack on a police vehicle. Muhammad Taha proposed and filmed the throwing of a stun grenade at an abandoned house to create a false report of an attack on a Jewish home, and he concealed the mobile phone used for communication with the Iranian handler.

This case is part of a pattern of recent revelations detailing systematic efforts by Iranian intelligence to recruit Israeli citizens and residents through social media and financial incentives. The modus operandi often involves initial 'test phases' with simple tasks like photography and information gathering, progressing to acquiring weapons, assassination attempts, and psychological operations designed to instill fear.
