IDF Destroys Massive Hezbollah Tunnel Network Funded by Iran
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently completed one of its most complex engineering operations, destroying a vast tunnel network spanning over 5.4 kilometers on the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon. The operation, involving over 1,100 tons of explosives, was carried out by the 36th Division, aided by the Yahalom unit and commando forces. The powerful explosion registered as a seismic event of magnitude 4.1. This strategic complex, built with direct Iranian funding, planning, and assistance, served as a central command and control base for Hezbollah's 'Bader' unit and included living quarters, weapons storage, and generators.
According to the IDF, approximately 50 Hezbollah operatives were present at the site at the beginning of the operation; most were eliminated, while the rest fled after being abandoned by the organization. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the operation as a "huge victory" against Hezbollah, emphasizing the destruction of the organization's largest terror fortress. He vowed to continue destroying terror infrastructure in Lebanon and eliminate any threat to Israel.
Before the demolition, forces evacuated significant quantities of advanced weaponry, including Iranian-made rockets, missiles, drones, anti-tank missiles, machine guns, mines, and explosive drones. Netanyahu showcased some of the seized arms, highlighting Iran's long-term funding and organization of this arsenal. A joint statement from Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz noted that the destruction of this infrastructure completed the organization of the security zone in southern Lebanon and prevented its use for invading the Galilee.
The operation, part of a broader campaign that began four months prior, lasted about three months and involved complex maneuvers, including a covert crossing of the Litani River, to surprise Hezbollah. Unofficial reports circulating on social media suggest Israel is considering transferring some of the captured Iranian-funded weapons to opposition groups within Iran, particularly Kurdish factions, as a tactic to destabilize the regime internally. While these reports remain unconfirmed by Israeli authorities, they illustrate the significant challenge Israel poses to Tehran. The operation underscores that any attempt by the Iranian axis to establish a presence on Israel's border will be met with complete destruction.
