Jerusalem Yeshiva Marks One Year Since Rosh Yeshiva's Passing

A year after the passing of Rabbi Yaakov Zacharia, the Rosh Yeshiva of 'Lev Eliyahu' Yeshiva, a memorial gathering was held on Rosh Hashanah eve at the yeshiva in Jerusalem's Ramat Shlomo neighborhood. Prominent Torah scholars, including Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, Rabbi Menashe Shua, Rabbi A. Daniel, Rabbi M. Pniri (Rabbi Zacharia's son-in-law), Rabbi Ovadia Hazan (current Rosh Yeshiva of Lev Eliyahu), Rabbi S. Dabbush (the yeshiva's Mashgiach), and Rabbi A. Sharbani (head of the new 'Lev Eliyahu' junior yeshiva), delivered speeches.

Speakers eulogized Rabbi Zacharia, highlighting his profound Torah scholarship and unique humility, noting his lineage from the esteemed 'Porat Yosef' Yeshiva and its leaders, Rabbi B.Z. Aba Shaul and Rabbi Y. Tzedaka. They praised Rabbi Ovadia Hazan for continuing Rabbi Zacharia's legacy by nurturing students in Torah and reverence, delivering lectures, and promoting in-depth study.

The event concluded with a completion of the entire Talmud in memory of Rabbi Zacharia, led by the yeshiva's students. A booklet detailing Rabbi Zacharia's teachings and letters of encouragement to his students, written during his travels abroad to support the yeshiva, was also distributed.

During Rosh Hashanah prayers, Rabbi Zacharia's son, Rabbi Meir Zacharia, who manages the yeshiva, was honored with the Maftir aliyah. Following the prayers, a memorial service was held for the late Rosh Yeshiva. Subsequently, students visited Rabbi Zacharia's grave at the Sanhedria Cemetery in Jerusalem, praying and pleading for his intercession against perceived decrees impacting Torah scholars and yeshivas.
