Nepal Floods Kill 1442, With Israelis Among Missing

Nepalese authorities have confirmed the discovery of 14 more bodies, bringing the total death toll from catastrophic floods and mudslides to 1,442. Thousands of residents and foreign nationals remain missing following the disaster, which struck the border region between Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal reported that 5,698 people are still unaccounted for.

The epicenter of the tragedy was the Langtang-Lirung mountain area in Nepal, where a massive ice and rock avalanche occurred on August 26. The resulting torrent of ice, mud, water, and stones swept through valleys, destroying villages, major roads, hydroelectric power stations, and the strategic Gyirong border crossing.

In China's Tibet Autonomous Region, the situation remains critical, with 43 confirmed deaths and 519 people missing, including 261 foreign citizens. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in extreme conditions.

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively searching for two Israeli citizens who lost contact in the disaster zone. The ministry is seeking 60-year-old Ron Cohen, who went missing in Tibet, and 41-year-old Katerina Sakovich, who holds dual Israeli-Belarusian citizenship. As of the morning of September 16, there was no new confirmed information regarding their whereabouts or condition.
