The story · English

The catastrophic flooding and mudslides on the Nepal-China border have resulted in at least 1,442 confirmed deaths and 5,698 people missing. According to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 1,399 bodies have been recovered in Nepal, with 5,179 individuals still unaccounted for. Fourteen new bodies were found in the last 24 hours. On the Chinese side, in the Tibet Autonomous Region, 43 deaths are confirmed, and 519 are missing, including 261 foreign nationals. The disaster originated on August 26th when an ice and rock mass collapsed near Mount Langtang Lirung in Nepal. The resulting flow of ice, water, rocks, and mud devastated communities, roads, hydroelectric power stations, and the Gyirong border crossing along the Sino-Nepalese border. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is continuing efforts to locate two Israeli citizens missing since the disaster: Ron Cohen, 60, last heard from in Tibet, and Katerina Sakovich, 41, who holds both Israeli and Belarusian citizenship. As of the morning of September 16th, there were no new confirmed updates on their status.
